Did you know that Lowell Observatory is the official Home of Pluto? That's right! Back in 1930 our very own Clyde Tombaugh made the discovery of Pluto just a few years after Lowell founder and namesake, Percival Lowell was on the hunt for "Planet X".
At the base of the San Francisco Peaks in Flagstaff Arizona sits Lowell Observatory's historic campus. This shirt features the San Francisco Peaks with Pluto rising above the horizon in the sky filled with stars.
What do we mean by "Home of Pluto"?
Pluto was discovered at Lowell Observatory by Clyde Tombaugh on February 18th, 1930.
Does Lowell Observatory astronomers still research Pluto?
Sure! Will Grundy is a co-investigator on NASA’s New Horizons mission that encountered the Pluto system for the first time in 2015. He heads the mission’s surface composition science theme team, working to learn more about the dwarf planet's makeup.
